Oakwood: 3 children found in squalid apt.; mother, father arrested

Tipped by school officials, Oakwood Police went to an apartment earlier this week and found three children living in squalid conditions, with no electricity, and drug paraphernalia lying around.

The discovery was made about 3:00 Monday afternoon when officers were sent to Columns at Oakwood Apartments reference to a welfare check on three children who had not been to school in more than a week.

OAKWOOD PD NARRATIVE:

“Officers made contact with Miranda Coggins(mother), Dustin Coggins(father), and Chad Driver(lease holder) living in the apartment. Officers observed that someone had spliced extension cords into the front porch light receptacle and that the power cords led into the apartment.

Officers found that the power to the apartment had been disconnected and that the occupants appeared to be stealing power from the apartment complex.

Three children aged (9), (11), and (14) were living in the apartment with no electricity. The apartment had rotting food on the kitchen counters and in the fridge. There was drug paraphernalia in plain view in the living room and the apartment had a strong smell of cat urine rotting food.

DFACS was immediately notified and responded to the location where they took custody of the three children and placed them with other family members pending further investigation.”

Detective Sgt. Stewart Webb responded to the location and was able to obtain a search warrant for the residence.

“We recovered suspected Methamphetamines, multiple weapons, suspected THC oil, drug paraphernalia, and two light socks that were hot-wired into the front porch light,” Webb said, who added that he also photographed the residence for the DFACS investigation.
