6,500-gallon sewer spill

GAINESVILLE NEWS RELEASE:

“The Gainesville Department of Water Resources
(DWR) has stopped a minor sewer spill adjacent to Lake Lanier.
The spill was located and remedied Thursday, July 3.
At approximately 10:30 a.m. July 3, the City of Gainesville received notice from a citizen
concerning a discharging manhole. At approximately 11:30 a.m., the discharge was located
near the 2800 block of Point Overlook. The discharge was deemed to be caused by grease
buildup in the sewer line. The clog was cleared by 11:50 a.m. and normal operations
resumed.
DWR estimates approximately 6,500 gallons of sewage spilled. The area of the spill was
assessed and no dead or stressed aquatic life were found. All field parameters for water
quality were within state water quality standards. Lime was applied to the area of the spill
for odor abatement.
The Georgia Department of Natural Resources Environmental Protection Division was
notified Thursday and signs were posted.
DWR reminds the public not to dispose of cooking grease and oils down the drain.”
