10-yr-old struck by car, seriously injured

A 10-year-old Gainesville girl was struck and seriously injured by a car in the East Hall area over the weekend when she darted into traffic while waiting with two other people to cross the road.

GEORGIA STATE PATROL NARRATIVE:

“(Saturday afternoon about 4:00) Christopher McConnell, 53, of Flowery Branch, was driving (headed) westbound on…Gillsville Highway. Blanca Mata Cabrera, 26, and two juveniles (10 and 6 years of age), of Gainesville were standing off the south side of the road, across the street from Carniceria La Superior. Ms. Mata Cabrera and the two juveniles were waiting for a break in traffic to cross the road toward Carniceria La Superior. Ms. Mata Cabrera had let go of the children’s hands for a moment to scratch her head.  The 10-year-old began to try and cross the roadway. Ms. Mata Cabrera tried to reach out and stop her, but by then the 10-year-old was struck by the driver’s side of McConnell’s car, suffering serious injuries.
