Judy Mecum, a retired Hall County sheriff’s deputy, has died. Mecum, the wife of former sheriff Dick Mecum, passed away Sunday at the age of 84 following an extended illness.
In a tribute to her, local law enforcement historian Chad White, notes that she accomplished many significant achievements throughout her career with the sheriff’s office. “She established the Juvenile Investigations Division and was promoted to sergeant, lieutenant, and captain. Judy had a deep passion for assisting and supporting the children in our community,” White writes.
During her 23-year tenure with the sheriff’s office, Mecum served as commander of the Crimes Against Children Unit and the overall commander of Criminal Investigations.
“Over the years, I have had the honor and privilege of working with Judy Mecum,” Hall County Sheriff Gerald Couch said in a tribute of his own Monday afternoon. “She had a passion for law enforcement and was an exceptional investigator. I particularly recall her having a quick wit and dedication to solving child-related crimes. She helped make our community safer and was a true public servant.”
The funeral will be Thursday at 2:00 at Memorial Park Funeral Home.
