UPDATE: Gainesville murder suspect captured

The suspect in the Friday afternoon murder at the Gainesville Motel 6 is in custody. Police said late Saturday morning he was arrested early Saturday in DeKalb County.

GAINESVILLE POLICE DEPT. NEWS RELEASE:

“Suspect in-custody on charges of murder and other related offenses stemming from the shooting at Motel 6.

Gainesville Police responded to the initial call of a shooting at the Motel 6 shortly before 2:30 p.m. on Friday afternoon.

The victim, Destyn Rashad Alexander, 34, of Braselton was transported to the Northeast Georgia Medical Center where he succumbed to his injuries.

During the course of the investigation, information was quickly developed that Corey Maurice Rucker of Gainesville, a known party to the victim, was responsible for the shooting death.

Rucker was arrested at approximately 4:00 a.m. this morning after investigators developed information which led them to a motel in Dekalb County. A multi-agency collaboration resulted in Rucker’s apprehension without incident. The agencies who assisted in the investigation and apprehension included the Hall County Sheriff’s Office, Georgia Bureau of Investigation, Federal Bureau of Investigation, and Dekalb County Police SWAT.

Rucker is charged with Felony Murder, Aggravated Assault, Possession of a Firearm by a Convicted Felon, Possession of a Firearm During the Commission of a Crime, and Theft by Taking a Motor Vehicle. He is being held at the Hall County Jail.
