UGA student death: the latest; Cobb teacher firing upheld; Atlanta moves against homeless

*Authorities say the woman found murder on the UGA campus Thursday was a nursing student at Augusta University’s College of Nursing in Athens.  Police say they are working around the clock on trying to solve the case. Meanwhile, classes at UGA have been canceled until Monday and school officials are urging students to buddy-up when walking across campus.

*The Georgia Board of Education is upholding the firing of a Cobb County teacher. Katie Rinderle was fired last year for reading a book called “My Shadow is Purple,” which addresses gender norms. The AJC says the state board unanimously upheld the firing without discussion yesterday. Rinderle’s attorney says a federal lawsuit has been filed on behalf of her and other teachers across the state.

*The city of Atlanta is planning to clean out homeless encampments. Officials with the mayor’s office confirmed yesterday that bridge encampments will be closed in the coming weeks due to infrastructure and public safety concerns. The city is also considering using the Athletic Club of the Atlanta Medical Center as a temporary emergency shelter.
