U P D A T E: Murder suspect arrested in Atlanta had been a fugitive since Dec. 28

The man arrested in Gainesville Wednesday who was wanted for murder by Atlanta Police had been on the run since late last month.

Anthony Hightower, 47, has been charged in connection with the fatal shooting of a man at a southeast Atlanta apartment complex. He is charged with murder, possession of a firearm by a convicted felon and possession of a firearm during the commission of a crime.

Atlanta Police say the shooting occurred Dec. 28 at an apartment complex on Constitution Avenue. Officers found the victim inside an apartment where he was pronounced dead.

Gainesville Police say Hightower, who is from Riverdale, was arrested following a traffic stop near Jesse Jewell Parkway and Prior Street. “Atlanta PD called Hall County 911 to ask for assistance after they identified one of their murder suspects,” a Gainesville Police spokeswoman said Thursday morning.

Hall County sheriff’s deputies assisted in his capture. Hightower was taken to the Hall County Jail after he was arrested. He was still there early Thursday.
