Two Union County High School football players were hospitalized, one in Gainesville, the other in Atlanta, after suffering serious injuries during Friday night’s game against Stephens County.
According to an update from the parent of the less seriously injured player, he was taken to Northeast Georgia Medical Center Gainesville with a “significant” concussion. But a CT scan showed no internal bleeding.
The condition of his teammate who was life-flighted to Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta, also improved steadily overnight. His father said doctors have been monitoring the return of movement and sensation in his legs. By early morning Saturday, he was able to bend his knees, later he regained full feeling in his legs, and eventually told his family he had walked around.
Both players expressed eagerness to return to the field once they recover.
Families said they were overwhelmed by the number of people across Georgia who reached out to check on the players and asked the community to continue keeping them in their thoughts and prayers.
