Two dead, 30+ wounded; Election watchers watching AI; Weather radar problems

*A mass shooting erupted during a homecoming celebration in central Georgia early today. Dooley County Coroner Brett Walls confirms that two men were killed, and 35 other people were wounded after gunfire broke out at a neighborhood block party in Vienna. The GBI says shots were fired near Pine Street while deputies were already on patrol at the event. WALB reports the gathering drew roughly a thousand people. It was the second mass shooting in a week’s time in that part of the state. Eleven were wounded, two critically, in a shooting in Macon last weekend.

*Georgia election officials are examining whether artificial intelligence could make it easier to identify how individual voters cast their ballots. The Guardian reports a Princeton University researcher found that publicly available election records and AI tools could potentially be combined to link voters to specific ballots. State officials say steps are already being taken to restrict access to key identifying data ahead of next month’s midterm elections.

* Five radar sites near the Gulf Coast are malfunctioning as millions across the South are under a flood threat today. Meteorologist Chris Zelman with WALB-TV in Albany and many other forecasters and storm chasers have posted to social media about the problem. They say the radars are working fine, but the data is not accessible outside of the local National Weather Service offices. Alabama Weather Network Meteorologist James Spann says no explanation has been given but technicians are working on it.
