Tornado hits Rockdale Co.; our area spared as storm system moved through Ga.

Officials confirm it was a tornado that touched down in Rockdale County overnight.

The National Weather Service (NWS) says the twister hit around midnight during the height of storms that moved through north Georgia. Thousands of people in the county lost power during the stormy weather.

FOX5 reports dozens of roads in the area are impassable due to downed trees. No reports of injuries, though.

Meanwhile, Gainesville and surrounding areas escaped the brunt of the weather system that had state emergency management officials and the NWS warning that we should prepare for possible damaging winds or a tornado. Data collected at Lee Gilmer Memorial Airport show the top wind gust overnight was 18 mph and rainfall totaled about half-an-inch.

The threat of bad weather has now moved out of the state.
