Swindlers take Gville firm for nearly $100K, elderly woman for $3,000

Gainesville Police recently received reports that a local company lost nearly $100,000 and an elderly woman $3,000 to swindlers.

A Feb. 7 police report issued last week says company’s loss happened on Feb. 5 and totaled $98,000.

What happened? “Scam,” police spokesman Kevin Holbrook wrote in an email, “called claiming to be bank, requesting information to be verified, used that info to transfer $98,000.”

That same week, Lt. Holbrook said, swindlers took a 92-year-old woman for the $3,000. “…callers advised subject they had locked her computer down, requested gift cards be bought in exchange,” he said in an email.

These were the largest scam losses investigated by Gainesville Police the first part of the month – and there were several others.

Holbrook also reported that $8,700 in copper wiring was taken from a construction site earlier this month.
