Stormy weekend ahead?

A cold front pushes into north Georgia Friday increasing rain and thunderstorm chances into the weekend, the weather service says in a Thursday morning advisory.

“Although the chances for widespread severe weather remain low, the highest chances are in north Georgia closer to the frontal boundary this weekend. Main threats for any storms will be gusty winds up to 40-50 mph and lightning.”

For Gainesville and vicinity, there’s a 60% chance of rain and thunderstorms each day Saturday-Monday.

By the way, Wednesday was the 12th straight day of high temperatures of 90 or more in Hall County. The UGA Weather Station in Oakwood shows that the highest temperature recorded during that period was a 97 on July 2. (The National Weather Service station at the Gainesville airport remains offline.)

And while we await the stormy weather, we can expect another couple of days – today and tomorrow – of highs in the 90s with heat index readings near 100.
