Stormy weather possible next few days

North Georgia is facing the threat of heavy rain over the next couple of days with winds at times gusting to near 40 mph.

The National Weather Service (NWS) is predicting at least an inch of rain in many places including Gainesville. The storm system moving our way has already resulted in a flood watch for portions of southwest Georgia and south Alabama.

The biggest threat for damaging storms in Georgia, however, is along and south of a line from Rome-to-Atlanta-to-Warrenton.

Here’s the three-day NWS forecast for Gainesville:

Tonight

A chance of showers, then showers and possibly a thunderstorm after 11pm. Low around 62. Southeast wind 10 to 15 mph, with gusts as high as 25 mph. Chance of precipitation is 90%. New rainfall amounts between a half and three quarters of an inch possible.

Thursday

Showers and possibly a thunderstorm, mainly before 4pm, then a chance of showers and thunderstorms after 4pm. High near 72. Southeast wind around 15 mph becoming southwest in the afternoon. Winds could gust as high as 30 mph. Chance of precipitation is 90%. New rainfall amounts between a quarter and half of an inch possible.

Thursday Night

A chance of showers and thunderstorms before 7pm, then a slight chance of showers between 7pm and 8pm. Mostly cloudy, with a low around 50. Windy, with a west wind 15 to 25 mph, with gusts as high as 35 mph. Chance of precipitation is 30%.

Friday

Sunny, with a high near 67. Windy, with a west wind 15 to 20 mph increasing to 25 to 30 mph in the afternoon. Winds could gust as high as 40 mph.
