Stormy weather: damage, wind, rain, closings

NOON – Rainfall at the Gainesville airport has now topped 3.00 inches – 3.15 inches to be exact. Winds have subsided. Top gust so far is now 32 mph. Meanwhile, Hall County EMA says there have still been no reports of major problems associated with the rain and wind. More road problems in Habersham County. You can find specific information on the sheriff’s Facebook page. At noon, Banks County was reporting nine flooded and/or closed roads. A Flashing Flood Warning remains in effect until 1:45 this afternoon for Hall and a number of other northeast Georgia counties. (See separate story.)

10:15 A.M. – FROM HABERSHAM CO. SHERIFF’S OFFICE:

“9:45 a.m. – Wilson Rd at the dip in Mt. Airy is impassable due to rushing water.

9:45 a.m. – Zeb Bryson Road / Faye Potts Road outside Clarkesville is closed at the creek due to water over the roadway.

8:50 a.m. – Ga. 197 North at the dip near Batesville is closed due to high water and debris.

8 a.m. – East Glade Creek Road outside Clarkesville is temporarily closed at the bridge until further notice due to high water levels.

County personnel continue to check other flood-prone areas.”

FROM HALL CO. EMA DIRECTOR ZACH BRACKETT:

9 A.M.: “We have had several trees down across the county and are experiencing localized flooding in the normal places. Nothing out of the ordinary.”

FROM HABERSHAM CO. SHERIFF’S OFFICE:

“8 A.M. – East Glade Creek Road outside Clarkesville is temporarily closed at the bridge until further notice due to high water levels.

ORIGINAL STORY (POSTED 7:00 A.M.)

he storm system we were warned was heading our way picked up steam during the night after teasing us with some strong winds yesterday. The windy conditions began about mid-morning yesterday and the rain moved in about 12 hours later. As of 6:00 this morning, heavy rains and gusty winds were continuing across most of north Georgia.

In Gainesville, data collected by the National Weather Service (NWS) at Lee Gilmer Memorial Airport showed a top wind gust of 31 mph and 1.41 inches of rain.

Some weather-related damage was reported in Dawson County overnight. The sheriff’s department there said in a Facebook post there was “debris everywhere” and some trees and powerlines down.

A number of school systems in the area are closed today because of the weather including those in Dawson, Banks, Habersham, Lumpkin, and White counties.
