UPDATE: State trooper killed near Suwanee identified

12:00 P.M. MONDAY UPDATE: The state patrol has identified the trooper who was killed Sunday as Jimmy Cenescar who was assigned to the Marietta state patrol post. Cenescar had been with the agency one year. Prior to that he was with the Atlanta Police Department.

Law enforcement officers statewide are mourning the loss of a trooper with the Georgia State Patrol.

The state Department of Public Safety (DPS) reported Sunday afternoon that the officer died “in the line of duty” as the result of a patrol vehicle crash. Georgia News Network reports happened on I-85 North at Lawrenceville-Suwannee Road. Details on exactly what happened have not been released.  

The Gainesville Police Department and Hall County Sheriff’s Office are among the law enforcement agencies in the state mourning the loss of the trooper.

A posting on the sheriff’s office Facebook page reads “We join our law enforcement colleagues around the state in offering our condolences to the Georgia Department of Public Safety in the line-of-duty death of a trooper earlier today. We’ll share further details when they’re available.”

A similar message appeared Sunday from the police department. “Our thoughts and prayers are with the men and women of the Georgia State Patrol this evening. Today, one of their own lost their life in the line of duty. Please remember the families and officers involved in the upcoming days.”
