*Georgia is spending $409 million to build its first new state psychiatric hospital in over half a century. State mental health officials will build the 300-bed facility in south DeKalb County for court-ordered criminal defendants. There are more than 700 mentally ill people stuck in local jails around the state waiting for beds.
*A caregiver is facing drug-related child cruelty charges in Gwinnett County. Court records show two children were sent to the hospital after taking gummies with THC. Their caregiver is now facing two counts of cruelty to children. Channel Two reports one of the children is on a ventilator.
*A former Jonesboro police officer is heading to prison for a deadly hit-and-run. A judge sentenced Godreque Newsom to six years yesterday after he pleaded guilty to vehicular homicide and hit-and-run charges connected to the May 2024 wreck. Investigators say Newsom left the scene after driving across several lanes of traffic and striking Abari Meade on the side of the road. Meade was waiting for Atlanta police after an accident.
*Atlanta’s mayor is feeling positive about the city’s experience and perception during the World Cup based on what he’s heard since it ended with many saying the Atlanta’s offerings were the best of any U.S. city. The next big event for Atlanta is the Super Bowl in just over a year-and-a-half.
