Student Benvon Roberts of Flowery Branch High School and teacher Kelly Brumbelow and (pictured) student Makana Dyrud of Riverside Military Academy with teacher Andrew Jobson were named Tuesday as the Hall County and Gainesville STAR Students and Teachers, respectively.
The announcements were made at a meeting of the Kiwanis Club of Gainesville which hosts the STAR Student and Teacher luncheon each year. In addition, students and teachers from each city and county high school were recognnized.
Roberts, Brumbelow, Dyrud, and Jobson will now compete for regional STAR Student and Teacher honors in March for the right to move on to state competition.
The PAGE Student Teacher Achievement Recognition (STAR) program, now in its 67th year, is sponsored, administered, and promoted by the Professional Association of Georgia Educators (PAGE) and the PAGE Foundation. Since its creation, the program has honored nearly 30,000 students and the teachers. To obtain the STAR nomination, graduating seniors must have the highest score on a single test date on the SAT and be in the top 10 percent or top 10 students of their class based on grade point average.
