Search for Habersham Co. man ends in Stephens Co.

The search for a missing Habersham County man ended Saturday morning when 26-year-old Tony Quinnion Mooney’s body was found in rural Stephens County. Mooney had been missing since 10:30 Wednesday morning.


Foul play is not suspected. according to a news release from Habersham County authorities.


The cause of death has not been determined at this time and is under investigation by the Stephens County Sheriff’s Office and Stephens County Coroner’s Office.


An autopsy will be conducted at the Georgia Bureau of Investigation State Crime Lab in Decatur.


“Our thoughts and prayers go out to Mr. Mooney’s family,” said Habersham County Sheriff’s Office Investigator George Cason.


In addition to ground searches, crews utilized search dogs and a drone in their attempt to locate Mooney.
“We are grateful for the assistance of personnel and resources from Stephens County Sheriff’s Office K-9 Unit, Stephens County Search and Rescue, and Georgia Department of Natural Resources,” Cason said.

At the time of his disappearance, a Habersham sheriff’s office Facebook posting said Mooney had disappeared “near the Stephens County line and is believed to be on foot. He may be an altered mental state, so please do not approach him.”
