*Atlanta Police are investigating a rush hour shooting that occurred on I-75 near the airport. A woman was found wounded and was taken to Grady Hospital in critical condition and later died. No details about a suspect or the circumstances leading up to the shooting have been released, and the name of the victim has also not been released.
*The Fulton County Board of Commissioners approved a $1.36 billion renovation of the Fulton County Jail Wednesday. The 37-year-old facility has been ravaged with filthy living conditions, violence, including multiple inmate deaths — especially the death of one inmate whose body was found covered with insects in a deplorable jail cell. But not everyone is on board with the decision. Atlanta News First reports that Commissioner Marvin Arrington Jr. and Fulton County Sheriff Pat Labat oppose the renovations, with Labat advocating for a new jail. The resolution for the makeover specifies that funding cannot exceed the $1.36 billion budget.
*University System of Georgia (USG) Chancellor Sonny Perdue announced Wednesday that he will retire from his job overseeing the state’s 25 public colleges and universities, ending a career that spanned more than four decades, from service on a local zoning board to the cabinet of President Donald Trump, with two terms as governor in between. “As I prepare to retire, I’m grateful for our presidents, faculty and staff, our students and the many communities that make up this remarkable system,” Perdue said in a statement.
