*LaGrange will be the site of a massive new Google Data Center, the tech giant announced on Tuesday. The Pegasus Parkway center will power Google searches, Maps, YouTube and more. It will be the second data center in the state for Google following an existing center in Lithia Springs. Atlanta News First reports that Patrick Bowie, LaGrange’s City Manager, said the center fills a void left by the exit of Jindal Films Americas, the city’s largest electric customer at that time, which closed its plant in 2024.
*A former Bremen City Schools teacher is facing more child sex crime charges. Investigators say Geoffrey Matthews was recently charged with nearly 40 counts combined of child molestation and enticing a child. He was arrested for alleged sexual assault and grooming a child earlier this month. A teen allegedly told Carroll County sheriff’s investigators that Matthews had an inappropriate relationship with her when she was 12.
*U.S. Attorney William Keyes says “Operation Sweet Silence,” a multi-agency, multi-year operation, has dismantled a multi-gang criminal operation that “terrorized” Columbus for the past decade. Thirty people were arrested and 119 firearms and $20 million worth of drugs were seized.
*Several agencies continue to fight a south Georgia wildfire that has now grown to at least 4,000 acres. Clinch County EMA Director Andrew Nelson the blaze which started Saturday is only about ten percent contained. He tells WALB officials want residents to pack essential items and ensure their families are ready to evacuate quickly, if needed. He says those living outside of the immediate area will see smoke and haze start to spread across south Georgia in the coming days.
