The National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) has finished its preliminary report on a “hard landing” of a small plane at the Gainesville airport last fall which reveals that there was a small fire involved after the plane landed and that the craft “was substantially damaged.”
The incident happened shortly before 6:30 p.m. on October 18.
The report also says that the passenger who was flying the Cessna 150 at the time “flew four low passes over the airport before landing the airplane on runway 5.” She had taken control of the plane after the pilot “became unresponsive” and shortly after he had announced plans to land in Gainesville.
The flight originated at Gwinnett County Airport at 6:02 p.m. The hard landing occurred about 25 minutes later.
The pilot was taken from the scene in critical condition and died a few days later.
