Rumors of a death Sunday at the Hall County Correctional Institution (pictured) were just that – rumors, according to a spokeswoman for the county.
Sarah Crowe said the state Department of Corrections (DOC) temporarily suspended visitation at the state-run lockup and other state-run prisons Sunday following a murder-suicide involving a prisoner and a worker at a southeast Georgia state prison. Social media postings suggested that a death had occurred at the Hall County facility, but it was actually at Smith State Prison in Glennville.
A food service worker died at the prison after an inmate shot her Sunday. A DOC spokesman said inmate Jay-drekus Hart somehow got hold of a gun and shot Aureon Grace, 24, in the kitchen about 4:30 Sunday morning. Then Hart shot and killed himself. No word on what if any relationship there was between the pair or circumstances surrounding the murder-suicide. Glennville is near Savannah.
