New Winder park: A $5M public-private initiative

A new city park is now open in Winder, the product of a five-million-dollar public/private initiative.

Ribbon cutting for the Winder Legacy Park was held Friday afternoon and it officially opened today.

Located at the corner of Bellview Street and Midland Avenue in downtown, the multi-year, multi-faceted venue has proven a unifying cause, according to city officials.

“This park is one of the best examples of a public-private-partnership I’ve ever seen,” said Chris Maddox, fundraising co-chair for the Barrow Community Foundation. www.barrowcommunityfoundation.org/know-before-you-go/

“The five-million-dollar development and construction involved in-depth coordination with the City’s Engineering Department,” Maddox added, “The City’s contribution to the park’s infrastructure, the County’s donation, and the support from private citizens all came together to create this one-of-a-kind park for our community. The city’s share of the cost was one million in work for infrastructure work.

Mayor Pro Tem Travis Singley addressed attendees of the event on behalf the Mayor and Council. Singley expressed how the park and playground will create more opportunities for out-of-town visitors to explore Winder and enjoy a more walkable downtown.”

In addition to the Barrow County School System, the city and Barrow County, other donors include Aikins Ford, Harrison Poultry, Northeast Georgia Health Systm and Republic Services.
