New group pushing for metal detectors in Gville, Hall schools

Born out of last week’s school shooting in Barrow County, a Gainesville lawyer, Candace Williams, and a friend have created Moms for Metal Detectors and are lobbying city and county school officials to have metal detectors installed at all local schools.

MOMS FOR METAL DETECTORS FACEBOOK POST:

“…We are both mothers. We are both professional business owners. We were devastated by the tragic lives taken at Apalachee high school…

(We) were up early the next day after tossing and turning the night before and (began) chatting about metal detectors on instagram.

It was such a simple resolution that potentially could’ve said the lives of the victims. We decided to begin this campaign together and spread awareness and hopes that our schools will never experience tragedies like this again.

I am a local attorney here in Gainesville. Every time I walk into a courthouse I have to go through a metal detector. If we go to a concert, we have to go through metal detectors. What if a metal detector had been installed at Apalachee High School? Could lives have been saved?”

A petition has been created which can be read and signed on Facebook. “We urge you to sign this petition and follow this page to send a clear message that parents demand metal detectors in schools,” the post concludes.
