One of Georgia’s newer cities is already eyeing opportunities to grow its footprint. It’s the one in Gwinnett County whose northeast boundary is now adjacent to the Hall County line. Mulberry, which was incorporated last year with a population of 26,000, just shy of the 30,000+ people who live in Lawrenceville, the county seat.
A map of Mulberry shows the city’s current boundaries and areas that could be annexed through pending legislation in the state Senate. The city is shaded in blue, while potential annexation areas are highlighted in bright yellow. (EDITOR’S NOTE: Picture has been cropped to show proposed annexation tract, in yellow at top of it, adjacent to Hall County.)
Meanwhile, Lawrenceville, which is now the most populous city in Gwinnett, has launched its own push to add about 19,000 people by annexing several parcels of land. The proposed timeline for doing this is as follows:
- Spring 2025: Gwinnett Legislative Delegation Approval and Governor’s Signature
- Fall/Winter 2025: Public Outreach
- Spring 2026: Resident Vote (referendum)
- January 2027: Incorporation of annexed areas (pending voter approval)
