*Carol Burrell, the retiring Northeast Georgia Health System President and CEO, has received the Georgia Commission on Women’s Leadership Legacy Award, citing her leadership in expanding access to healthcare in northeast Georgia and “transforming lives.”
*The state Department of Public Safety is honoring four women, including Frances Bennett of Cumming, who were the first female troopers in Georgia. Bennett, Marynell Arrington, Kay Pickett, and Ira Nell Koran graduated from the 52nd Trooper School in 1978, breaking barriers for future generations. The recognition comes during Women’s History Month, which was first celebrated nationally in 1980. Bennett eventually rose to the rank of Sergeant First Class and became a post commander.
*Named for the retired longtime head of the Gainesville Parks and Recreation Department, a new athletic complex was dedicated Saturday. The Coop honors Melvin Cooper’s 47-year career with the department. Located at 2500 Parkside Way, it features five baseball/softball fields, one multipurpose field, walking trails, playgrounds, pavilions, concession facilities and restrooms.
