Three days after torrential rains flooded McCaysville, the northeast Georgia town is still under a boil water advisory and a “water conservation request.”
And due to the “extensive damage” to the water utility lines and water treatment plant, Fannin County Emergency Management Agency (EMA) says water conservation may be needed “for approximately the next two to three weeks, or until further notice,” while repairs are completed and the system returns to full operating capacity.
Meanwhile, bottled water is being distributed at city hall daily from 9:00-9:00.
And one Gainesville couple woke to the news Sunday morning that their cabin on the nearby Nottley River had been affected by the rains that lashed that part of the state Saturday night/early Sunday.
“We were not there,” Connie Stephens says of her and her husband Tony, “but my neighbors actually called…and sent a video. She said your picnic table is missing. Our bench and two chairs were saved because we tied them to a tree (but we lost) firewood, picnic table, umbrella, and a black chair…”
Stephens she and husband drove to the cabin Sunday and found the lawn was littered with debris and several pieces of lumber. “We’re not sure where that lumber came from,” she said, adding “Mother Nature is a forced to be reckoned with. However, we are grateful for all the water considering the drought we’ve been in,” noting that Vogel State Park will benefit as well since the lake has been drained due to an issue with the dam.
Stephens said they have owned the cabin about five years and average about one flood a year.
