Major improvement in drought conditions, lake level unchanged, hot, dry weather ahead

There has been much improvement in the drought conditions in Georgia over the past week, but the level of Lake Lanier is unchanged, and we may be entering another lengthy spell of dry weather.

The U.S. Drought Monitor (USDM) says a band of counties from Augusta-to-Macon-to-Columbus is now drought-free. “Severe” conditions are now confined to the northeast Georgia mountains including portions of Habersham, White and Lumpkin counties.

Hall County, meanwhile, is about evenly split between “abnormally dry” conditions and “moderate drought.” Counties adjoining Hall to the southeast and south are considered “abnormally dry,” as well.

But it remains to be seen where we’ll be in another week or two. The weather service says we’re entering a 7-to-10 period when there may be little or no rain and temperatures in the 90s with heat indexes in the triple-digits.

The lake level is holding at 1066.7 – where it’s been for about ten days.
