A man who was a fixture around Gainesville schools for years has died.
Mr. Major Nelson, Jr., 84, graduated from Morehouse College in Atlanta, obtained his Master’s degree from the University of Georgia and began his teaching career in Gainesville. And was, according to his obituary, “a contributor to school integration.”
He was given several Teacher of the Year awards. After retiring from Gainesville City Schools, he began working at the University of North Georgia as a counselor. In all, his career in education spanned over half of a century.
Nelzon’s funeral will be Friday at 1:00 at First Baptist Church.
