Local lawmaker talks issues as he and others prepare for a new legislative session

Georgia lawmakers will convene Monday for a 40-day legislative session – and we have more on what’s on the mind of one local legislator as he prepares for the session.

State Rep. Emory Dunahoo appeared last Friday on Community Forum with 97.5 Glory FM’s Mike Wofford and while we’ve already reported on the two issues that are front-and-center with him Local legislator among U.S. lawmakers who want more Christianity in the classroom there are other key topics he’d like to see addressed.

They include the school tax exemption for senior citizens, other tax matters, immigration, and the in-migration in Georgia as more companies locate here and its impact on the state’s political landscape as it appears changing from “red” to “blue.”

Meanwhile, House Speaker Jon Burns last week emphasized the importance of education and ensuring safety for students after the tragic shooting at Apalachee High School last September. He also highlighted the need for proactive mental health programs in schools. Some of the other issues include income tax rebates and strengthening the healthcare workforce.

While new leadership is present among House Democrats, Republicans maintain a significant majority in both the House and Senate and Steve Gooch of Dahlonega will again serve as Senate Majority Leader.
