Chattahoochee Riverkeeper (CRK) has issued a Swimming Safety Alert after learning of a report of a suspected algae bloom on Lake Lanier.
In a Facebook post, the group says it is in a single cove on the Six-Mile Embayment. This bloom appears isolated to one small area, CRK reports. “DO NOT go near smelly, discolored water or green or blue scum,” the post advises. “Harmful algal blooms (HABs) can make people and pets sick through skin contact, ingestion, or inhalation.
“This image was taken at Lake Lanier’s Six-Mile Embayment on Sunday, June 7. If you suspect a HAB, you can report it to CRK via our hotline and to state authorities (the Alabama Department of Environmental Management or Georgia Environmental Protection Division).”
The riverkeeper notes that once an algal bloom appears, there is little that can be done until it naturally goes away, but it’s important to document when and where they occur. Learn more at https://chattahoochee.org/our-work/habs/
