So, just how cold was it during January when that Polar Vortex roared into Georgia?
Well, the National Weather Service (NWS) at Peachtree City says the average temperature at its nine reporting stations in north and central Georgia, including Gainesville, averaged five degrees below normal for the month.
Macon and Peachtree City led the way at 6.4 degrees below average. Gainesville was four degrees below normal, according to data collected at the airport. The coldest reading of the month in Gainesville occurred on the 22nd when the low bottomed-out at 15. That was also the day the other places included in the report suffered their lowest temperature with a +10 at Peachtree City leading the way.
Precipitation? There was an across-the-board deficit for the month, led by Gainesville at 2.31 inches below normal.
Data for the rest of the state – south Georgia and those places in central Georgia not covered by the Peachtree City office – are collected by NWS offices in Jacksonville and Tallahassee, Florida.
