It was a cold, windy day for a ‘swim’

With winds gusting into the 20s and wind chills in the 40s, a large number of people ushered in the New Year Wednesday by jumping into Lake Lanier at the Olympics venue on Clarks Bridge Road. It was the Lanier Canoe & Kayak Club’s 27th annual Polar Bear Plunge, a major fund-raiser for the club.

Jumpers of all ages came – in all shapes and sizes. Some jumped completely clothed. Others wore costumes; there was even a “chicken,” of course. And there were those who took the plunge in their swimsuits. Some jumped feet first, others dove into the icy waters, and still others did back flips into the deep.

And there were some who came just to watch or to paddle their canoes and kayaks in the waters near the jump site.
