The National Weather Service (NWS) says conditions are right for a return of icy roads late this (Wednesday) afternoon continuing through midday Thursday across much of north Georgia, including Gainesville and vicinity, and all of middle Georgia.
NWS SPECIAL STATEMENT:
"Melting of snow and runoff of the water this afternoon will freeze on roads tonight creating areas of slick and dangerous road conditions. In addition, roads in shady areas, especially on secondary roads, hilly terrain and north-facing slopes, remain ice covered and will remain slick and dangerous through the night.
Cloud cover Thursday will limit melting during the morning. But fortunately, temperatures are expected to rise above freezing around midday and remain above freezing until around 8 PM after which temperatures will fall back into the mid to upper 20s.
Unnecessary driving after 6 PM is strongly discouraged. If you have to drive, use extreme caution. Proceed slowly and allow extra distance between you and the vehicle in front of you. Heed any messages from local officials on road closures and driving conditions."
The Hall County Sheriff's Office responded to at least half-a-dozen weather-related accidents Tuesday night - all occurring on icy road. There were no serious injuries.
