While the poultry industry in our area, an important part of northeast Georgia’s economic engine, escaped the brunt of Hurricane Helene’s impact on our state, the industry as a whole in Georgia suffered more than five billion dollars in damage. That’s according to a new report on statewide agricultural losses from the University of Georgia Cooperative Extension Service.
Helene destroyed or damaged hundreds of chicken houses, resulting in a significant loss of animal life, the report says. The $5.5 billion total figure includes reduced revenue due to the unavailability of chicken houses.
Poultry is the leading agriculture commodity in Georgia.
