*Dangerous heat indexes are expected in parts of central and east Georgia today, prompting the weather service to issue a Heat Advisory for counties along and southeast of a line from Athens to Columbus. Forecasters say the temperature is expected to hit the low 90s today in much of the state with heat index readings in the triple digits. Some relief is expected tomorrow when scattered thunderstorms are expected.
*After weeks of burning, Georgia’s two largest wildfires both in Brantley County and the one in Clinch and Echols counties are now fully contained. Combined, they scorched over 50,000 acres and caused substantial damage. The efforts to suppress the fires cost the state more than $35 million.
*A new app is allowing residents in Houston County the ability to report family violence anonymously. The Houston County Sheriff’s Office says the app was developed after 14 of the 16 victims of homicide last year in the county were tied to family violence. Sheriff Matt Moulton tells 41NBC the app is already making a difference in the lives of victims. The app is free to download and allows users to file complaints anonymously.
