HCSO NEWS RELEASE:
“The Hall County Sheriff’s Office (HCSO) Accident Investigation Unit (AIU) has charged a Clarkesville man with first-degree homicide by vehicle following the death of one of the victims of a March 5 traffic collision on Interstate 985/Lanier Parkway.
Hall County Jail personnel booked George Lovell Boggs, 46, into jail on Monday morning, March 17. In
addition to the felony, AIU investigators charged Boggs with misdemeanor offenses of reckless driving,
distracted driving, two counts of following too closely and defective equipment.
The initial investigation determined that the crash happened at roughly 2 p.m. in the northbound lanes of the interstate near the Ga. 13/Atlanta Highway overpass at mile marker 17. At the time, traffic was congested, and Boggs, who was traveling alone, failed to brake for the slowing vehicles.
His 2002 Ford Excursion hit the back of car and SUV, which in turn struck two vehicles in front of them.
Hall County Fire Rescue transported five victims of the crash to Northeast Georgia Medical Center, including Julie Anna Griffith, 35, of Cornelia. Ms. Griffith, a passenger in one of the vehicles Boggs initially hit, died at the hospital on Thursday March 13. The remaining four victims taken by ambulance have since been treated at the hospital and released.
Boggs, who was not injured in the crash, remained in jail without bond on Tuesday afternoon, March 18.”
