HCSO: Guard your card

A skimming device was discovered on a gas pump card reader at a local convenience store recently and that has prompted a warning from the Hall County Sheriff. ‘s Office (HCSO).

A skimmer is a small tool criminals attach to credit/debit card readers to collect card data, which can later be retrieved by the person who placed the device there.

Investigators say you should take precautions before swiping, tapping or inserting a card. They recommended checking for loose or unusual parts on the machine, wiggling the card reader and covering the keypad when entering a PIN.

They say if you notice something unusual you should alert the store manager and avoid using the machine. And if you think you may have been victimized, call the Hall County Dispatch non‑emergency line at 770-536-8812, ext. 8, and request to meet with a deputy.
