HCSO: Elderly man found living in filth, caregiver arrested

A 90-year-old man’s caregiver is free on bond after Hall County authorities say the man was found recently wandering alone in a Candler Road neighborhood, “dirty and smelling of urine.”

According to a report released by the sheriff’s office Tuesday, deputies were called to the 2000 block of Candler Road about 7:25 Friday night.

HALL CO. SHERIFF’S OFFICE (HCSO) NARRATIVE:

“Deputies were able to make contact with the man’s caregiver, Maria M. Amante, 48, who had left the residence to pick up food. When Ms. Amante returned, she allowed deputies to enter her home. They found human feces on the floor next to a couch where the elderly man slept. One bathroom was under construction and the other was blocked.

The victim was taken to the hospital for assessment. He then was transferred to the care of Adult Protective Services.

Ms. Amante was arrested and transported to the Hall County Jail. She posted a bond of $26,000 and was released from custody on Saturday…”

Amante was charged with felony elderly neglect.
