Hall TSPLOST referendum gets new life

The Georgia Senate Tuesday passed TSPLOST (Transportation Local Option Sales Tax) legislation that breathes new life into a possible TSPLOST referendum in Hall County. The House had already passed it.

Sen. Shelly Echols (R-Hall County) in a Facebook post, put it this way; “We…passed the TSPLOST legislation. Yall remember the mess Hall County had with one city holding TSPLOST hostage last summer…not anymore! Just waiting on the Governor to sign it now!” That “city” Echols referred to is Buford.

The bill eliminates the requirement that all governments in a county must agree to TSPLOST before a referendum can be held.

EARLIER STORY (POSTED JULY 27, 2023): Plans for a Transportation Special Purpose Local Option Sales Tax (TSPLOST) referendum in Hall County this year were scrapped by the Hall County Commission Thursday night.  The reason: a months-long disagreement between the county and Rest Haven and Buford over divvying up proceeds the tax, if approved by voters, would have generated.
