A Habersham County Sheriff’s Office deputy escaped injury when his patrol car was
struck early Friday while on the scene of a mechanical breakdown on Ga. 365 near Alto.
“Officers initially were requested at 4:16 a.m. to Ga. 365 southbound near Alto-Mud
Creek Road to shut down a lane for a trailer (load of chickens) that had lost its tires,” Habersham County spokesman Rob Moore said. “
Initially, a Baldwin police officer responded at the request of the sheriff’s office.
A sheriff’s deputy was dispatched at about 5:30 and arrived about ten minutes later to “continue the standby” chickens were off-loaded to another trailer.
At 6:15, the deputy notified dispatchers his car had been struck by another vehicle but that there were no injuries.
Moore said the driver of the vehicle that hit the patrol car did not move over for the deputy’s car, “which had blue lights activated and was stationary.” Georgia’s “Move Over Law” requires motorists to move over when approaching a stopped emergency vehicle or, if that’s not possible, slow down.
