Gville’s downtown paid parking makes its debut

Gainesville’s new downtown paid parking program was activated Monday right on schedule.

While the City has seen nearly 8,500 uses of it since the soft launch April 6, as of Monday, drivers parking in applicable zones are now required to engage the ParkGVL system to redeem their two free hours and pay the $4 hourly rate if extending parking sessions beyond those two hours.

According to City Manager Bryan Lackey “Not only are users discovering the system is extremely easy to use, but many have taken notice of available parking during peak hours when, in the past, there has been none. It’s encouraging to hear many are finding it more manageable to support downtown businesses as they’re able to find a spot near their favorite establishments to sit down for a quick bite or run in to grab beverages, to-go orders and/or online purchases.”

Although previously identified as an “app”, the ParkGVL system does not require users to download anything to their mobile devices and is accessible through a web-based application (or web app), meaning it’s accessed entirely through a web browser, requiring no local installation.

Drivers who fail to engage the ParkGVL system on or after May 4 risk receiving a citation from the Gainesville Police Department (GPD).
