Gainesville Social Security Office closing

The Trump Administration plans to permanently close the Gainesville Social Security Office and four others in Georgia.

Offices in other parts of the country are also being closed. The other four offices in Georgia that are closing are in Brunswick, Columbus, Thomasville, and Vidalia – the highest number of any state so far.

Sen. Raphael Warnock (D-Ga) blasted the move.

“Permanently closing five Georgia Social Security offices will make it harder for Georgia seniors, especially in rural areas, to enroll in the program, solve payment issues, report fraud, and more.

As I have said before, I am all for cutting government waste and abuse, but never at the expense of hardworking Georgians, especially our retired seniors.”

Sen. Warnock went on to say that this move will “make mistake…go towards tax cuts for the ultra-wealthy” and that he will fight tooth-and-nail against “this reckless action.”

The Social Security Administration is preparing to lay off at least 7,000 people from its workforce of 60,000 as part of the Trump Administration’s continued efforts to shrink the federal workforce across the United States.
