The Gainesville-based District 2 Public Health Office says it has been made aware of a scam targeting local businesses. “The scam has currently been reported in White County, but businesses throughout all counties in our district should be aware,” according to a news release.
Businesses and chamber members in White County have received phone calls from individuals claiming to represent the chamber and requesting $500 sponsorships for tote bags for the White County Health Department.
But the chamber is not soliciting sponsorships for this purpose, and the White County Health Department is not soliciting sponsorships for tote bags. “We encourage businesses throughout District 2 Public Health to remain vigilant when receiving unsolicited requests for sponsorships, donations, or payments,” officials say. “Please do not provide payment, banking, credit card, or other financial information to anyone making this request.”
If you receive a similar call or are unsure whether a request is legitimate, hang up and contact the organization being represented directly using a verified phone number. For a list of the District 2 health department numbers visit: https://phdistrict2.org/district-office-2/
