Gville man free on bond following hit-and-run arrest

A 28-year-old Gainesville man, Marcus Arron Chastain, is free on bond following his arrest over the weekend on a hit-and-run charge. The charge, according to the state patrol, was the result of an accident that happened Saturday on Old Cornelia Highway at Bennett Lane.

STATE PATROL NARRATIVE:

“(The investigating trooper) determined a 2019 Nissan Rogue was traveling south on Old Cornelia Highway and was struck by a black sedan that was traveling west from Bennett Lane.

The driver of the Nissan Rogue stayed at the scene. The driver was identified as Steven Paul Williamson (65) of Gainesville. The black sedan left the scene, traveling west. After speaking with a witness, it was determined that the vehicle was a black Mazda.

During (the) investigation, evidence was obtained from the vehicle that left the scene. The trooper cleared the scene and started looking in the area for the Mazda. Mazda was located nearby and the evidence matched the damage area of Mazda (and Chastain was arrested).

There were no injuries from the accident.”

A Hall County Sheriff’s Office spokeswoman says Chastain was released on a $1,300 bond Monday afternoon.
