Gville BOE prepared to permanently link two retiring members to the school system

Retiring Gainesville Board of Education (BOE) members Willie Mitchell and Sammy Smith will be attending their final regular board meetings Monday, and the board is prepared to act on a couple of resolutions to forever link them to the city school system.

Supt. Jeremy Williams will ask the board to designate the access connecting Positive Place to Collins Circle at Fair Street International Academy Willie Mitchell Drive. According to the agenda for the meeting, “The Superintendent recommends naming the connector Willie Mitchell Drive in honor of Mr. Mitchell’s service to Gainesville City School System and the Fair Street Community.”

As for Smith, “The Superintendent recommends the naming of Sammy Smith Media Center at Gainesville High School in honor of Mr. Smith’s service to Gainesville City School System and Gainesville High School,” the agenda item reads.

Mitchell has been on the board 34 years and Smith has served for 16 years. Both chose not to seek re-election this year.
