A one-car accident over the weekend on I-985 was caused, the driver admitted, because he was using his phone at the time. He was also allegedly DUI.
The state patrol (GSP) said Tuesday Terry Benal-Cruz, 23, of Gainesville was southbound Saturday when he lost control and struck a concrete barrier twice. However, he was still able to leave the scene before troopers arrived but was later arrested.
Troopers said the vehicle was traveling in the left lane near Oakwood when Benal-Cruz failed to maintain his lane and hit the barrier on the west shoulder. The vehicle then rotated and struck the barrier again before coming to rest in the middle of the roadway. He left the scene but was later arrested and told investigators he lost control because he was on his phone just before the accident.
He was charged with DUI, Failure to Maintain Lane, Use of Wireless Device while Driving, and hit-and-run.
