GBI investigating death of shoplifting suspect

A Cumming shoplifting suspect died Sunday after he was taken to a hospital for treatment of a leg injury police say they noticed after his arrest.

Th deceased was taken into custody in the parking lot at the Target at Marketplace Boulevard, according to a news release from Cumming Police but not before he tried to flee the arresting officers on foot, dropping items from the store as he ran. The release also says he was arrested “without the use of any force.”

At the time of his arrest, officers noticed an injury to one of his legs and he was taken to Northside Hospital Forsyth for treatment. “Upon arrival to the hospital, the suspect experienced a medical emergency and died,” the release says.

Police say that while the arresting officers were enroute to the store, they received information that the suspect, whose name has not been released, had been involved in thefts from other Target stores in the area and had “threatened violence toward” a loss prevention employee at one of them.

The Cumming Police Department has asked the GBI to investigate the suspect’s death.
