FRIDAY POLICE BLOTTER: $9K lottery scam, $4K bad check, theft by taking arrest

*An 81-year-old Gainesville man recently lost nearly $10,000 in a lottery scam, according to Gainesville Police. The victim said he was told he had “won the lottery” and that he needed to send $9,000 to collect his winnings… and he did. It was just earlier this week that an 82-year-old woman was taken for $1,400 in a similar con.

*Gainesville Police spokesman Kevin Holbrook says a local business was the victim of the bad check case, which cost the firm $5,000 when a “fake check was mobile deposited in the name of the victim.”

*A 44-year-old woman, Tekesha Nicole Morgan, is the suspect in the forgery case. She’s facing eight charges of Forgery in the 3rd degree, according to Lt. Holbrook, who says she had warrants taken out for a November 2023 incident. “She cashed stolen checks on two occasions.” Morgan was arrested Thursday.
