Four states, but not Ga., sue feds over proposed ICE detention/processing facilities

Four of the eight states chosen by the Trump administration as future sites of the massive detention/processing immigration facilities have sued the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) to keep them out, claiming the federal government has failed to perform environment reviews they require. But the AJC reports that Georgia, where Oakwood and Social Circle have been named possible sites, is not a party to the suit.

All four of the states that have sued – Arizona, Maryland, Michigan, and New Jersey – are headed by Democrats. Georgia, of course, is not.

“Attorney General Carr supports well-funded, well-secured ICE detention facilities in Georgia, located in communities that want them and are prepared to host them,” says a statement from the Carr’s office and quoted in the AJC. “There are tens of thousands of violent criminals in this country illegally and removing them must be a priority.” Carr is a Republican who is running for governor this year.

Oakwood and Social Circle officials have made it clear, over and over, they the centers are not wanted in their cities because their infrastructure, such as water and sewer, cannot handle the thousands of inmates they would bring into the communities.
